Airlie Beach (One Birthday, Two Bruised Legs and a Flaming Stormtrooper)

Thursday 25th – Monday 29th:

Now in Airlie Beach, staying at the Airlie Cove campsite.  The weather hasn’t been too good, grey skies and occasional drizzle.  The highlights have been:

Oliver gets a Birthday present... he walked the neighbour's dog!

Oliver’s 8th Birthday (July 29th – much excitement!), he was very happy with his presents (DS games, Leggo Star Wars Battle Ship, some Star Wars Figures) and his Birthday Cheesecake, but he was less than impressed when I set fire to one of his Star Wars figures on the cake (I thought it was a candle!).

Birthday Boy. Eight today!

Meeting the Matsons from Tasmania:  The children were of similar ages to Ems and Ollie and the family were in to mountain biking, so we joined them for a ride a trail from Brandy Creek.

It was an out and back ride, and the first half started downhill.  Ems and Ollie really enjoyed the high speed descent but were not too enamoured by the return trip uphill.  Nevertheless, with much encouragement and plenty of snacks, they managed to get to the finish in reasonable shape.  The only injuries were to Emily’s shin (bashed when rock hopping in one of the creeks) and Charlotte’s knee (trapped between the bike frame and handlebars whilst crossing a ditch).

Had dinner with the Matsons at Mango Jacks in Airlie Beach, it was an odd place; a pizza/pasta restaurant at the front, a betting shop and bar at the back.  The fearsome threesome in the “Security” T Shirts at the door suggested to me that it might not be a good place to be later in the evening.  No matter, we had nice company and the food was pretty good too.

The excitement is building as the Whitsunday boat trip approaches and we meet up with the Campbell Team.  However, we are a little concerned about the weather; it’s not looking very good at the moment but the forecast is looking good.
